It all starts with beer
A documentary about 10 Dutch Brewers on a collaborative journey to the USA.
For centuries beer has been at the center of the table, people gather around it, share ideas and pleasure while drinking it. While this ritual stayed the same, beer itself has changed a lot. The beer market has witnessed a revolutionary transformation in recent years.
Even through times of economic stress, the craft beer market has shown that quality beer is a product that brings many people, jobs and knowledge together. This demonstrates a positive shift that is not only about the quality of the beer, but also about a larger cultural and economic change.
For some reason this revolution started more than 20 years ago in parts of the United States, particularly in Portland, Oregon. We wanted to capture this change: where it all began and with the people who made it possible.
Together with 10 Dutch Craft brewers, we traveled to Portland to find out why this local market is flourishing. The Dutch Brewers were invited to present their beer at the Oregon Brewers Fest. Art Larrance, organizer of the OBF, had been to the Netherlands for a beer expedition and experienced the same kind of craft beer revolution that he was part of in Portland some 2 decades earlier. We wanted to document this revolution – now and then – to bring this story back to the Netherlands and share it with the rest of the world.
This documentary illustrates why Portland became such a pioneer in the craft beer revolution – thinking and acting sustainably, supporting local producers and nurturing such a strong (beer) community. This inspired us, and we hope these ideas spark the same kind of quality and innovation in the Netherlands. Wouldn’t it be great if cities like Utrecht and Amsterdam become important hubs of creativity, knowledge and pleasure too?
